LIVE WEBINAR

Assessing & Communicating Progress

How do we know therapy is working—and how do we help caregivers understand progress when change often unfolds gradually through play?

This live CCD training focuses on assessing progress in child-centered play therapy through play themes, polarities, and meaningful moments of change. Participants will learn how to notice shifts in play as indicators of internal growth, understand how that growth supports changes in behavior over time, and translate therapeutic progress into clear language for caregiver communication and documentation.

Assessing Progress in Child-Centered Play Therapy: Themes, Meaningful Moments & Communicating Change

Child-Centered Documentation (CCD) – Modules 3 & 4 | Live Training

One of the most common questions in child-centered play therapy is: How do we know therapy is working—and how do we communicate progress to caregivers in a way that feels meaningful and clear?
This live training focuses on assessing progress through the lens of Child-Centered Documentation (CCD). Together we will explore how play themes often unfold through polarities, how subtle shifts in play can reflect meaningful internal growth, and how these moments can help us understand a child’s movement toward stronger sense of self, self-regulation, and relational capacity.

Because behavioral concerns are often what bring families to therapy, caregivers understandably want to know how progress is unfolding. In child-centered play therapy, however, internal growth often becomes visible before behavioral change is noticeable outside the playroom. This training will focus on learning to track and interpret those shifts in play, connect them to the CCD theory of change, and communicate progress in ways that feel grounded, developmentally informed, and accessible to caregivers.

Completion of CCD Modules 1–2 is recommended, as this training builds on the Child-Centered Documentation framework. Prior participation is not required. We will begin with a brief overview of the CCD framework before focusing on practical tools for assessing progress and understanding therapeutic change in play.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the Child-Centered D theory of change and explain how internal growth in play therapy relates to behavioral change outside the playroom.
  2. Identify common play themes through the lens of polarities and explain how these themes may reflect developmental and therapeutic shifts.
  3. Analyze shifts in play as indicators of progress toward stronger sense of self, self-regulation, and relational growth.
  4. Translate play-based indicators of progress into clear, developmentally informed language for caregiver communication and progress documentation.
  5. Apply practical strategies for assessing and tracking progress over time while honoring child-centered play therapy principles.

Special Live Training Partnership with QIPT

This training is being offered live in partnership with the Queensland Institute of Play Therapy. We are excited to bring this learning opportunity to the QIPT community and to connect with play therapists across Australia and beyond.

As part of this partnership, QIPT members are eligible to register at 50% off the standard registration rate. Please contact QIPT for the member discount code and registration details.

We look forward to learning together as we explore how to recognize, assess, and communicate progress in child-centered play therapy.
